Industry Mandates for ISO 14001 Registration

Since December 31, 2002, GM suppliers were required to demonstrate conformance with ISO 14001 and provide proof of certification or a plan for implementing the ISO EMS.

Ford mandated all production and non-production suppliers with manufacturing facilities to certify a minimum of one manufacturing site to ISO 14001 by December 31, 2001. Ford required all supplier manufacturing sites to be certified by July 1, 2003

DaimlerChrysler required Tier 1 production and non-production suppliers to be certified to an ISO 14001-based EMS as of January 1, 2003

In 2001 Honda asked its suppliers to introduce ISO 14001-certified environmental management systems.

Toyota required suppliers who provide raw materials and/or parts and components to develop, implement and certify by Dec. 31, 2003 an environmental management system that conformed to the ISO 14001 standard.

IBM encourages its suppliers to align their EMS with the requirements of ISO 14001 and to pursue registration.
