About the Standard
Basal Action Network (BAN) e-Stewards™ focuses on the toxic material components of electronic waste (e-waste) by establishing requirements for on-site and downstream processing and export of used and end-of-life electronic equipment. ISO 14001 forms the basis for this standard, which has been enhanced to meet the specific requirements of the e-waste recycling industry. Supplementary requirements relate to: Data security; Worker protection; Reuse and refurbishment; Downstream accountability; Export; Insurance; Site Closure. Its structure is based on the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle.
The purpose of e-Stewards™ is to enable an organization to set and meet commitments for prevention of pollution, worker safety, compliance, data security and continual improvement in EHS&S matters. Concern for proper management of e-waste is widespread. It is a rapidly growing segment of the waste stream and is challenged by the introduction of new materials and components. Retailers and manufacturers are adopting product stewardship principles and therefore requiring, promoting or facilitating take-back programs with organizations who manage e-waste EHS&S responsibly. These programs are consistent with opinions of the public, government and non-governmental organizations concerned with the negative impact on workers, environments and communities from the release of toxic materials during improper processing.
